It’s playtime again at Baltic with an exhibition aimed at kids
An exhibition described as ‘tactile’ and ‘interactive’ will make Baltic regulars’ eyes light up, especially if they’re parents of young children – or indeed young children with long memories.
Opening this weekend is Play Interact Explore, the latest in a string of popular exhibitions which invite audiences not to admire but to get stuck in.
Occupying the now traditional spot on the ground floor, it is the work of Lucy Cran and Bill Leslie, a couple who came to visual art from the worlds of film and theatre and set up their artistic enterprise, Leap Then Look, in 2019.

You can see the filmic and theatrical training in their colourful array of 3D invitations and provocations.
What it looks like after the first young visitors get among it all is anybody’s guess.
“We work with people of all ages and abilities, creating vivid experiences of contemporary art in all its forms - sculpture, photography, film, performance, mark-making and installation,” they say.
This they do through interactive artworks, exhibitions, events and workshops.
And they add: “Our work aims to be engaging, thought-provoking and inclusive, bringing people together to explore the possibilities of art through active participation.”
Play Interact Explore was developed with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and those with mental health challenges.
It has delighted gallery visitors in other places and looks set to do likewise at Baltic where it can be seen until June 1, 2025.
“People stay for hours,” says Bill with a smile. Parents, you have been warned!
Also at Baltic this weekend you can enjoy – and even buy – the fun creations of artists Alex Sickling (ceramics) and Bianco Perry (textiles) who have set up their Happy Mart opposite the Baltic shop.
Who could not warm to one of Alex’s ceramic Love Rat creations? They’re just one element of a pop-up mart to gladden the heart.
