Northumberland park pays its part in hailing cup final hero
Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has been honoured following his Wembley triumph. Tony Henderson reports
A waterway walk in Northumberland National Park has been temporarily renamed to mark Newcastle United's Carabao Cup victory.
Elsdon Burn has been swapped for Dan Burn in honour of the scorer of United’s first goal in a Wembley final since Alan Gowling in 1976.
Blyth’s Dan Burn not only scored the vital breakthrough goal in the final but also earned the Man of the Match accolade.
The Big Dan Burn Walk, a 3.5 mile trail noted for its views, now stands as a tribute to Dan's remarkable contribution.
This temporary renaming by Northumberland National Park Authority will run until Newcastle’s next match on April 2.
Tony Gates, authority chief executive officer, said: “In an unprecedented and temporary move, Northumberland National Park Authority wanted to honour Dan’s incredible contribution to sport and culture in the region.
“Elsdon, once a place at the centre of defence in Border Reiver battles, seems like a fitting place to mark Dan’s and the whole teams’ heroic achievements.”
“Northumberland National Park is a place as grand and expansive as Dan himself and if he ever wants a place to train, we have over 405 square miles where he will be made to feel very welcome.”
To find out more about the walk, see the route on the Northumberland National Park website.
