Panto joins forces with NSPCC for free performance
The Exchange 1856 in North Shields is putting on a special show for children who may not otherwise enjoy the festive fun of pantomime this year. Simon Rushworth reports
Bring your mum, dad, brothers — and ugly sisters too — as festive favourite Cinderella takes centre stage at one of the North East’s friendliest family venues.
In the true spirit of Christmas, theatre company Mendes Management has joined forces with children’s charity the NSPCC.
And the special performance of a classic pantomime is set to pull out all the stops for local kids who might otherwise miss out on a magical night at The Exchange in North Shields.
Danielle Mendes, director of Mendes Management, said: “Christmas is a time for families, for magic and for hope.
“Mendes Management is incredibly proud to partner with the NSPCC to bring a little sparkle into the lives of children who may not otherwise get the chance to enjoy the magic of theatre.
“We want every child to believe they can live happily ever after.”

Sparkly costumes, catchy songs and a story that’s been cherished for generations are guaranteed as children, their families, carers and support workers settle down for an evening of top-class entertainment.
But there’s a serious side to Monday’s special free show as funds raised throughout the December run of Cinderella will support the NSPCC’s life-changing work — including their ‘Speak Out, Stay Safe’ campaign.
The vital initiative educates primary school children in how to recognise and report abuse, empowering them to stay safe from harm.
Cheryl Ellis, NSPCC schools coordinator, said: “This is what Christmas is all about — coming together to make a difference in the lives of children.
“Mendes Management’s support will help us continue to provide essential services to families and children across the North East.
“Through initiatives like ‘Speak Out, Stay Safe’, we can ensure every child has the knowledge and confidence to stay safe. It’s truly wonderful to see the community rally together in this way.”
2024 marks Mendes Management’s fifth Christmas season at The Exchange. A venue spokesperson added: “We’re over the moon to welcome Danielle and the team back this Christmas.
“Their pantos have become a cherished part of the season and this year’s Cinderella is set to be their most magical yet.
“We’re proud to support their NSPCC partnership and help bring joy to children who deserve it.”
Limited tickets are still available for Monday’s show. Schools interested in attending the panto, or in learning more about how the NSPCC can support their pupils, can contact Cheryl Ellis at cheryl.ellis@nspcc.org.uk.
