Twisting Ducks introduce audiences to Hi, I'm Charlie
A new play created and performed by North East artists with learning disabilities and autistic creatives will take to the stage at Newcastle Theatre Royal on Saturday (June 7).
Hi, I’m Charlie is the latest production from The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, and will be performed at the venue’s Studio Theatre at 2.45pm and 7.45pm.
Developed over the past year by 11 performers from the company’s Saturday Theatre Royal Academy, the play explores identity, perception, and the barriers we all face -sometimes from others, sometimes from ourselves.
“Charlie faces barriers — at work, at home, in everyday life,” the company explains. “We all face barriers though, don’t we? And actually, who really is Charlie?”
Founded to support people with learning disabilities and autistic people across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland, Twisting Ducks works with over 800 people a year to develop creative skills, build social connections, and create powerful original work. Their shows aim “to provoke thought, and to stimulate change”.
The company’s work at Newcastle Theatre Royal includes both Saturday and Wednesday academies. The Wednesday group’s most recent production, What Am I Like?, was performed in November 2024.
“We’re delighted to be back at Newcastle Theatre Royal with a bold new play,” said Cat Catizone, the company’s drama facilitator.
“Hi, I’m Charlie asks big questions - about identity, barriers, and how we’re seen by the world. It’s thought-provoking, full of heart, and features a number of brilliant new performers making their debut with us.”
Tickets for Hi, I’m Charlie are £12 (carers free) and available from theatreroyal.co.uk or via the box office on 0191 232 7010.
